Andrew is our little blessing! After 6 years of trying to get pregnant and losing a baby along the way (due to miscarriage), we were blessed with Andrew in October of 2006. We knew really early on that he had some physical issues (severely tongue tied @ birth, significant GI issues right away, torticolis of the neck), but did not realize all of what was going on for some time. He is a very interesting little one as he is advanced in some areas (very intelligent), but has some gross motor delays, speech delays and he had significant and chronic GI (gastrointestinal) issues until he received stem cell therapy @ 4 1/2 years of age. He had been to far too many doctors trying to figure out all that is going on, and has been in various therapies since 4 months of age. We went to doctor after doctor after doctor, but nobody could really say what was “the issue / issues” for sure. One month before Andrew’s 4th birthday, in Sept of 2010, Andrew was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP). As devastating as it was to hear that, I believe after lots of research that it is true. Obviously, the CP is considered mild in his case or we would have been told this long before he was 4 years old, but it still leaves Andrew with lots of struggles to overcome.
We have found some innovative medical treatments that are helping Andrew IMPROVE (praise God!), but they are not covered by insurance & are currently costing us around $ 750 per MONTH out-of-pocket on a school teacher’s modest salary (down from $800 / month for over a year, better at least). It is difficult financially, to say the least. Locally (Phoenix area), Andrew sees a craniopath (who is also a chiropractor) weekly for cranial sacral work. Andrew used to “toe walk” and within 8 visits to the craniopath, he was walking flat-footed and continues to do so. He also sees a medical doctor who only practices holistic medicine every few weeks and is on a detailed regimen of holistic medicines (natural remedies) thru this doctor. He also has a wonderful orthotist who makes his leg and foot braces. All of these doctors have been instrumental in Andrew’s improvements! Andrew also receives speech and physical therapy weekly, which are very beneficial in furthering his strength and speech intelligibility skills.
We have taken Andrew to California the last 4 summers to get (adult, NOT fetal) stem cell and hyperbaric oxygen treatments done. He has had both umbilical cord stem cells from the umbilical cord (donated) of a healthy full term baby (done the 1st year in Mexico via the CA clinic) and bone marrow stem cell transplants from the bone marrow in his own hip. Both types have provided Andrew with significant progress! Praise God! Each summer, Andrew received approximately 20 hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOT) before and after the stem cell procedures. These treatments together (stem cell & HBOT) have produced GREAT IMPROVEMENTS in Andrew’s functioning! The treatments cost MANY thousands of dollars though (and again, insurance will not pay). We are SO THANKFUL for all the people who have helped us raise the money to do these treatments for Andrew and to pay for his day-to-day treatments locally as well!
